Guests can be on a separate network and still cast if you turn on guest mode on a chromecast. Why yes, I take my phone into the bathroom, or my tablet. And I should have wired two more, so not a stretch to get to 18 for a larger home, but that is a LOT of zones regardless! I agree the OP needs to explain his zone count, but I have 11 zones in under 5000 ft. Plug in the cable, and now Alexa comes out of your main speakers (and worse, TRIES to even when the hifi system is powered off.) But no, they don't separate the music output (line out) from the internal voice/speaker. I bought a Dot for the voice controls, but would have attached it as a source to the WHA system if it worked properly. The Amazon Echo system so far hasn't done that well. The idea of connecting an array of AE's or Chromecasts to an appropriate, passive multichannel amp is a very decent WHA solution.īut it has to work "well" with WHA gear and use cases. "multi-zone amp" - well, that's a passive amp that is part of a WHA system, so not the same thing. Anyone in my house can glace at the wall and see what's playing, though, something that would otherwise require an interruption of whatever I'm doing to "look up on the app" for them. If you haven't had good wall-mounted controls in addition to mobile device apps, I can understand the impression. You have your phone with you in the bathroom? Let EVERY guest onto your internal network (not the Guest WiFi)? But yes, it is an opinion. The name "Siri-in-a-can" was coined by Seth Johnson of the HomeTech.fm podcast.īoth mobile and fixed / wall controls have their strengths. It is hard to imagine the need for 18 unless the house is 20k square feet! As an aside, I think the number of zones should be re-thought. I'd want to be sure that anything I ordered now could be returned after the opening keynote! Tonnes of possibilities to speculate on at the moment. Maybe even Airport Express boxes will come down to a more reasonable price after that. Maybe this unannounced product will also be able to use Airplay for additional 'zones'. Maybe with other streaming music services. If Siri-in-a-can does materialize, one would expect it to work with Apple Music, at least. AKA an Amazon Echo competitor.of which a key feature is its use as a music solution. Expectations are all over the place but with a lot of folks are anticipating 'Siri-in-a-can'. OTOH, Apple is holding WWDC 2017 starting on June 5. I would never buy a multi-zone amp that doesn't have an acceptable mobile app. For my family, an iOS device is virtually always closer than a wall-mounted keypad would be. I know jautor and others disagree but I don't think keypads are necessary these days. Then, no matter what app you're in, swipe up from the bottom to bring up the Control Centre and you can pause, mute, adjust volume or change the AirPlay target. Tap that and choose which zone the sound should be sent to. (The OP specifically mentioned iPad.) On iOS, your music app includes the Airplay icon. I know people love the Sonos app but AirPlay isn't that hard. Doing that with Sonos Connect amps would be very expensive. Are you referring to Sonos-style music systems as opposed to wired WHA set-ups? The OP wants in-ceiling speakers and plans 18 zones. Sorry, I don't follow what you are saying. Get dual-voice coil speakers if you don't want to do two speakers in a zone. Also, if you're planning on using one speaker per zone don't buy mono-speakers. Have you found a matrix with a 6 inputs that will output to 18 zones bc I haven’t seen one using a Google search. You have to add another Dayton amp or a Sonos Connect Amp for the additional 6 zones to get you to 18. I don't know how you can have 18 zones of audio with your current list of equipment. Your current equipment list only gives you 12 zones. Remember that with Airplay you can only play your Iphone on one zone unless you connect the AE to the bus input and you can’t group AE’s together.Īre you trying to have independent audio for each zone or do you plan on connecting a streamer to the bus input and streaming the same audio source to all zones at the same time? If you’re planning on connecting to the bus input maybe a volume selector would be appropriate so that you can mute zones where you don’t want to hear the audio.Ī 12 channel amp, which the Daytons are will provide you with 6 zones of audio. You need a streamer (Sonos, Chromecast Audio, Airport Express (AE) for Airplay, etc.) for that. How are you going to get Spotify to your amps? There isn't such a thing as a Spotify Connect. Click to expand.I think that you're missing something.
